Safety precautions for seniors during Diwali

Yay! It’s that time of the year again. It’s that time of the year when the houses are cleaned, rangolis are drawn on the floor, lamps are lit all around the house, various flavors of sweets and savories spread in the air, and the house doorways are adorned with garlands. This festival needs no introduction. Yet, the phrase, ‘Festival of Lights’ sums it up. By now you would have started preparing sweets and savories at home or buying it from shops, making the guest list for your Diwali celebrations at home, planning on the food menu, purchasing clothes, and whatnot.  The festival spirit has knocked at your door already. Amidst all these tight preparations, sip a cup of tea and read this blog for a few minutes.

If you have seniors at your home or in your neighborhood, this blog is a must-read. Here are a few safety precautions for seniors that you can follow and ensure during Diwali.

If you are hosting a Diwali party, here is a suggestion for you. You will be planning games and fun activities for all. But are these games and fun activities planned in a way that seniors can also take part? If yes, don’t change anything in your planning. If not, make some alterations or add new games and fun activities to your list. To put it in simple words, make them feel included in your celebrations.

Going on next, crackers are an important part of Diwali celebrations. Flowerpot, chakra, Sparklers, Laxmi bomb, oh wow the list goes on. We all know bursting crackers has lots of impacts on the environment and other living creatures, right now the discussion is not going to be about whether or not to burst crackers this Diwali, but how to burst crackers safely. While bursting crackers make sure you take the responsibility to not affect the newborns, kids, senior citizens in your home or locality, animals, and the environment on a larger scale. Don’t burst crackers that are too loud and have the capacity to harm the hearing capacity or affect the neighborhood. Don’t let them walk outside for a couple of days after Diwali, due to crackers the air can be polluted and it could affect them. Not only that there will be so much cracker dust and waste on the road that can also affect them.

Food. Indian festivals are meant to add some weight to everyone. Yeah with all the sweets, savories, and big fat feasts, festivals take our taste buds to party in a taste paradise. But our stomachs are not so pleased by everything that we take in. Digestion problems and other

stomach problems are common for all irrespective of age. When it comes to the silver community, the care should be extra. Make sure to avoid sweets or savories or dishes that can affect your loved one’s health. Keep their health in your mind while planning on the menu. It is good not just for their health but also for everyone’s health. Try coming up with alternatives for the sweets or dishes that are not good for your elderly. Rather than saying no, you can give them an alternative. Good food can be tasty and healthy.

Cleaning the house and decorating the house are two works that not most of us like to do. Mainly because it is time-consuming, and also the physical effort it involves. Dust is also another main problem when it comes to cleaning. When dust enters the body it can cause many issues. It will take a long time to get cured. Therefore make sure to keep them away while cleaning.

Generation gaps are inevitable. Seniors might have opinions and suggestions during your planning. Don’t ignore their suggestions. Be flexible and hear them out. Listen to them and incorporate their suggestions, and you will have the best celebration. Making them feel included is all they expect. Festivals are meant to be celebrated as a family with happiness and laughter. Coming together with families and friends, making memories, and enjoying every moment of the day is the focus of having celebrations. With that being said, Athulya wishes you a happy and safe Diwali.
