World Oral Health Day

The word “cavity” by itself is concerning, but do you know how it actually develops?

It is nothing but a tiny hole on you tooth caused by a felling of an enamel which withers overtime and primarily caused by foods that contain sugars and acids.

Seniors are easily affected by cavities because of the recession of their gums or if they have already had a gum disease. A very obvious reason could be that the older adults aren’t exposed to fluorides like we have been from an early age.

Is it anxiety inducing when you are at the doctor’s and you hear him say the word “cavity”, especially when you least expect it?

Although the whole procedure of a filling will only save your tooth, it is even easier when a remedy lies right there at your kitchen!
Well, don’t give up just yet – we have a few easy ways to help either prevent or reverse the destructive effects of a tooth decay.

Step-up your oral care routine:

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day; once in the morning and once before you go to bed. Ensure you brush in a circular motion around the surfaces and corners of your tooth and gums.
  • Using an anti-bacterial mouthwash formula helps to kill leftover bacteria.
  • Try to avoid sugars as much as possible as these may easily wear down your enamel since sugar tends to blend with the pre-existing bacteria present in the mouth hence forming acids.

Make dental visits more frequent:
Annual teeth meetings are a must especially for senior adults as any tooth decay or plaque can be diagnosed and treated at its early stage itself.

HOW LATE IS TOO LATE?

Well, as disappointing as it might sound to you, a cavity may reach a point where it is no longer reversible.
If the cavity is growing at a more rapid pace, a requirement for a root canal or extraction arises.
The most commonly noted symptoms are that of a wincing pain due to sensitivity of the tooth – which is a sign enough that you might require a filling.

All this said, a good defence is a good offense.
Proper dental hygiene habits that are readily at your disposal should most definitely help you maintain an optimal health and of course, the confident happy smile lines that comes with it!
